A New Buffy Movie

When I saw the other day, at the Hollywood Reporter, that a new Buffy movie could be in the works, I screamed for joy a little on the inside. Back when I used to regularly watch TV, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was at the top of my schedule, followed closely by “Angel.” Yeah, I was a WB nerd. I even watched “Dawson’s Creek.” But I digress. There was more to my sheer excitement, however, than just a little inner child going, “Wheee!” for after I read the title, I saw the attached photo (of original Buffy Kristy Swanson) and then read the actual article.
You see, this movie will attempt to relaunch the franchise in film, but creator Joss Whedon (who gets some slack from Mercury News for the “Dollhouse” series) has little to do with this incarnation. Apparently the director of the original 1992 film, Fran Rubel Kuzui, has his hands on the project, and is re-casting just about everyone.
So not only are we losing Sarah Michelle Gellar as the star, but more than likely we will be losing the rich stories built up for the however many seasons “Buffy” aired on the WB and UPN.
I look forward to this new movie with trepidation. The 1992 one with Kristy Swanson was something of a big no-no to me, and I loved the first three or four seasons of the TV series. But then again, the idea of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is what drew me to the movie in the first place, and I’m hoping that a decent story can be hammered out and the special effects technology can bring something new and amazing to the series.

Without Whedon I am very, very skeptical of this re-launch, re-do, what-ever-it-is.
Personally I would like a Buffy movie with the TV show’s actors and Whedon at the helm but I can’t even get a Serenity sequel (and the cast wants to do that) so I’m not going to hold my breath.

but don’t they who make those decisions know this is a bad idea? they want to make money right? the movie with kristy swanson wasn’t very good for many reasons. i started watching the show about the time they got to college and it was so funny but maybe that was because the characters and story lines had depth. and anywayz, i thought she was in jail for dui or something. also, she’s a little older than she was, so would she still be the slayer or is she the new girl or girl’s watcher?
i liked angel too, but haven’t had the chance to watch his latest show. i did see david boreanaz do the robot on rachael ray recently…
