So I forget how I found Woot, but I remember the first thing I got from them was an iPod Nano. The squarish one, not the new, sleek, 3rd generation model. It’s decent. It plays my podcasts, and my albums. It makes me content. The second thing I got from them were new headphones for the Nano.
I think I’d gotten a few more things. MicroSD cards for the camera and cell phone. A cheap MP3 player which I use as a recorder.
Then there are other sites like 1 Sale a Day and Thing Fling. I have checked, but I keep forgetting to go back.
I decided that I visit woot at least twice a week because they have a cool name. You get something cheap and you’re like, “W00t! I just got something cool for cheap!” (Never mind that they also have a Roomba and a Dyson for sale every once in a while.)
And do you know why I go to Woot more often than the other sale-a-day sites, like the abovementioned, or Yugster? Because it’s got a cool name. Same with Twitter. I use it because, since the name is so simple to remember, I can remember to go there.
Yugster. What the hell is that? BrightKite? That’s a mouthful. How am I going to remember to visit that site? Or Plurk? Sure, Plurk’s fancy-looking, and a one-syllable name, but it’s not catchy, like Twitter.
I think the point is, if you want a popular website, you really do need a cool sounding name for it. Preferably short.
And I think that’s why About 12 Minutes isn’t as popular as it could be.
