Alice in Chains is a band I spent my high school years having other people play for me and tell me how great they were. I however was too stubborn to admit I liked anyone out of that era other than Pearl Jam and it took me well into my twenties before I began to appreciate them. Actually the first time I actually contemplated giving them another try was while Jerry Cantrell and his band were opening for Creed on the 2002 Weathered summer tour. I wasn’t paying much attention to them onstage as I could hardly hear anything that they were playing but then he stopped and addressed the crowd urging them to sing along to the next song. That song was Rooster, a song I remember from my high school days and one that while Cantrell is certainly no Layne Staley. who had died in April of that year, he did a great job on the song I began to think that maybe they weren’t the band I thought they were. I quickly picked up The Alice In Chains Greatest Hits album and found I enjoyed a lot of their work.
For me Alice in Chains isn’t on the same scale as Pearl Jam but I probably like them about as much as I like Soundgarden and more than I like Nirvana. I also really, really liked their album that released last year, Black Gives Way To Blue.
