Keeping Warm for the Holidays
With winter bombarding parts of the U.S. already, one can only wonder what’s in store for us. Luckily, the Philly area is kind of lucky. Christmas Eve for us will be about 50°. But eventually, the cold air will blast its way into our lovely historical city and then we’ll be battling frigid temperatures just like Chicago and Detroit had seen. So, what’s a boy to do? Or a girl, really.
I mean, there’s the standard stuff you can do, like layer clothing and snuggle up to a loved one to keep warm, but is there anything you do in the cold winter months to keep warm?
Like for example, I like to turn the bathroom into some sort of a sauna. I turn the water only on hot, filling the tub, and closing the door behind me. Once the water cools I add the bubbles—I’m a three-year old—and dive into the bathtub. Sure it sucks hanging out in a bathroom, but I have my laptop to keep me occupied, or play video games, or watch movies that I download. And as long as I don’t plan to play Mortal Kombat II I’m safe from electrocution. And it is pretty warm.
And then there’s this other thing I do that I picked up from the old TV sitcom Cheers. In one episode, Norm, the regular, comes in from the blistering snowstorm, plops himself on his normal bar stool, and orders a cold one. Diane, the snooty waitress, asks, “How can you drink cold beer on such a cold day?” When Cliff, the know-it-all mailman, concocts one of his hair-brained answers about how it evens your inner and outer body temperatures, Diane responds by asking why you drink beer on a hot day, hoping to stump Cliff. At Norm’s insistence, Cliff answers simply, “What else are ya gonna do with it?”
And I guess that’s why it stuck in my head, the response to the second part was funny. And even if it’s not a true fact, if it’s cold outside I’ll grab an ice cold PBR and chug it, because even if it doesn’t make me feel warmer, it sure makes me feel better about being so cold.
Do you do anything a little out of the ordinary to keep warm?
