The Karate Kid Trailer

OK. Two things: 1) Kung Fu and Karate are completely separate martial arts forms. I don’t think the terms are interchangeable. So already this movie is going to make me sick. 2) I didn’t know, when it started, that it was a Karate Kid trailer, and was mocking the obvious similarities throughout the trailer. “Hey, Karate Kid remake!” “Watch this be called The Kung Fu Kid.” “Take off the jacket. Put it back on.” Fight! And then when the title appeared, the shock of it actually being The Karate Kid made me guffaw right in the middle of the theatre.

Two more things: 1) YOURE THE BEST AROUND! So catch that fly! 2) I hope mini-Will Smith uses the crane kick at the end.

Let’s go to Google!

We can now, beacuse Topeka, KS renamed itself to Google, KS!

The new city name will last for just one month. At that point, the capital will revert to its beloved, historically significant city name.  But for just this month, kids, you can blame mayor Bill Bunten when you get this question wrong on your tests.

Probably the most amazing thing ever

Please enjoy Axe Cop and Dinosaur Soldier, compliments of Ryan.

The best part? It’s written by a five-year old, and drawn by a 29-year old. And they’re brothers! Also, the theme song kicks ass. For more awesome adventures, visit Axe Cop the website.

Nightmare on Elm Street

I never did watch the original A Nightmare on Elm Street until at least ten years after its release.  By this point, the series had jumped the shark, and was having Freddy Kreuger — I dunno — becoming a baby or something.  Watching the original Nightmare reminded me of Freddy Kreuger’s dark roots, long lost by the sixth and supposedly final Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare.

TRON: Legacy Trailer

This morning, Nick tweets “The new TRON: LEGACY trailer is … AWESOME.” And I’m thinking, what new one? There’s a new one? Of course, I can only find the one released at San Diego Comic-Con last year. And I’d seen that back in October.

But MAN is it worth the watch!!!! Check it out if you haven’t yet. You won’t regret it.

Tron: Legacy is scheduled for release in winter, 2010, and I seriously want to see the new trailer. Do you know where I can find it?

How much Sci do you need in Sci Fi?

Leave it to me to find an article about Sci Fi at Tech Republic, but this weekend’s Geekend asks that age old question, “Does the science in science fiction have to be accurate?”

One great example brought up is Starship Troopers’ gigantic alien bugs. Of course bugs can never be that big. It’s physically impossible for them to be giant-sized. But we still loved the movie anyway, right? OK, we didn’t love the movie, but it wasn’t the gigantic bugs that ruined it for us.

My opinion is, it doesn’t matter so much to me if the science is perfectly accurate—as long as you make your Sci Fi interesting to watch (or read, but when you’re talking to me, “reading” is essentially foreign).

I used to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation because the stories had fascinated me. And also, I’m a sucker for Time Travel—a gimmick on which many science fiction shows fall back, simultaneously rewriting their own rules on the topic—but it never bothered me that this stuff isn’t physically possible. I just liked to watch Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise be British and t3h awesomer than James T. Kirk. That, of course, was before I learned that Kirk was très awesomer than Picard and special effects technology (and the 60’s) was what made the show so hokey.

So, how accurate do you think science needs to be in science fiction?

One last thing to consider, for your two cents. Rod Sterling said something like, “science fiction makes the implausible possible, while science fantasy makes the impossible plausible.” Where would you draw the line between implausible and impossible?

The Lovely Bones / Movie Theatres

Went to AMC Neshaminy theater last night to see The Lovely Bones. Based on a novel by Alice Sebold, the film centers around Susie Salmon’s untimely death and how her family copes. Or something like that.

I wouldn’t exactly know because of the assholes three rows in who stumbled in loudly and kept talking throughout the damn movie. It got so bad that we walked out, got passes to see the movie at a later time, and went home.

Analog T-Shirts

Check these out: a series of t-shirts designed to keep old school alive. There are only two designs there, and in just a couple of colors, but I think they’re pretty cool.

The irony of it is, as the title says, “these tees were made using digital tools,” but I don’t care. I like that red “analog memory card” one. Birthday gift, anyone? You have a few months. ;-)

META!

The Internet is kind of an amazing thing. This afternoon, I ordered a pizza from Pizza Hut. But I didn’t need to speak to anyone at all. It was all handled over the phone!!!!

And here’s something else that’s just crazy! @wheredidjengo ordered Internet through the Internet!

Conclusion:

The Internet transcends all and has now become all.

Robots + Unicorns

This is one of those games I shouldn’t be caught playing, because it has unicorns, but Spiritonin’s Robot Unicorn Attack is one amazing game.

I mean, sure you play as a unicorn, but it’s a robot unicorn! A robot unicorn that … collects faeries … and busts through crystalline stars … but it’s a robot unicorn that busts through crystalline stars! And it explodes!!!

Best. Drive-Thru. EVER!

After depositing my expense check, Vanessa and I went to Starbucks because she wanted coffee.  Me?  I could care less this late at night.  But, as things go, we got there, and I immediately wanted a grande café mocha, which I eagerly stated to the metal box with the speaker.  The most pleasant voice ever responded, asking what Vanessa would like.  We ordered her drink and the polite voice gave me the total, asked me to drive around to the window.  The voice was so soothing and calm (and at a coffee place, right?) and I felt so relaxed.  It was like I was 30,000 feet above sea level and on my way to some place like DTW or SFO.  After receiving our coffee, I was disappointed that the barista didn’t thank us for flying with Delta and to gather our belongings before exiting the plane.

But, seriously, when compared to drive-thru windows I had frequented in the past, this one was like Nirvana.

I plan to use a Starbucks drive-thru whenever I can from this point forward.  Always and forever.

FACEBOOK! AUTOMATION LABS! OH NO!

A warning about Facebook! PEOPLE CAN STEAL YOUR PROFILE INFORMATION!!!

This was circulating on Tumblr before I got it from V.  Of course, being the lazy chav that I am, I had to look this up to see if it was a legitimate security faux pas on the part of Facebook.

Luckily it’s not.

About.com goes on to state:

Here’s the deal. The fact that the names appeared does not mean these people have access to your Facebook account or are up to no good. It just means they’re associated with the company or group name you typed in.

So have no fear, dear readers. The world is a-okay.

Conan’s a real nice guy

Take note, ye who wish to be classy gentlemen. When Conan O’Brien left NBC, they gave him about $45 million as severance to him and the band and a few others. It didn’t cover the working guys, the stagehands. The guys who really keep the show going. They got fired and nothing else—no severance package, no pat on the back, no thumbs up.

But that’s okay, because Conan himself gave them six weeks’ pay out of his own pocket. And a pat on the back. And a thumbs up.

NBC may have screwed up royally by giving Leno his old spot back (I sure as hell won’t be watching that time slot anymore), but it really gave Conan O’Brien yet another chance to shine. All jokes about his pale skin aside.

Dear taylor swift

I still love you, even though you can’t sing near your idol Stevie Nicks. I totally understand, too. How could you concentrate with a legend standing just five feet from you?

Also, congratulations on that award thing you got on Sunday night. I fell asleep around Bon Jovi’s thing (Sugarland = dream time) and missed it.

Love,

Jay V

P.S. I cared so much about your album win FTW that I waited an extra day to write you.

Gremlins gets a renewal

Well, isn’t this exciting? After years and years, and eventually decades, of waiting, according to the Latino Review, a new Gremlins movie is in the works. And the really exciting part about it?

IT’S IN 3-D!!!

Or so they report, as does the Buzz, who—though they have a very bland blog name—seemed to scoop Latino Review on this. Of course, MarketSaw reported the three-dimensionalness of this new movie before any of us. So it appears MarketSaw > The Buzz > Latino Review > Jay V.

Sounds fair. I’m just telling you because I’m so excited I could hum a song while purring like a kitten!

But, seriously, I hope this is a sequel to the original two. So quick are film companies to remake or reboot things (see Spider-Man 4) that they miss the chance to advance a story that was already laid before them, to enrich the lives of Billy and Kate, and to see what Papa Peltzer is up to nowadays. (I’d love to see what he’s “invented” since Gremlins.) Movies have begotten sequels more than ten years later. The Color of Money—sequel to The Hustler—comes to mind, and yes I thought of that example before the latest Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

So, why can’t we fast-forward from 1990 and have a twenty-something-year-later sequel?

search results

um… these are the latest in search results from the Google Analytics that I installed last month. (I hope you guys don’t mind, by the way.) As you can see, we’re not a  very popular site anymore. I blame the bunch of us for not being diligent and writing everything that’s on our minds for a while. That and the severe lack of a show, which has to be addressed quickly. But that’s not what’s important today. Can someone explain to me exactly why “Saudi ladies” is at the top of the list?

Also, a quick shout out to Somewhat Shameless. Visit their blog and follow them on Twitter. Hey, peeps! When can we be on your show?

Netflix Review: 11:14 [2005]

Five seemingly random story lines intersect at precisely 11:14 p.m. in this innovative drama-thriller written and directed by newbie filmmaker Greg Marcks. Even though they’re strangers, Buzzy (Academy Award winner Hilary Swank), Mark (Colin Hanks), Cheri (Rachel Leigh Cook), Jack (Henry Thomas) and Eddie (Ben Foster) will become a part of one another’s lives — even if it kills them. Patrick Swayze and Barbara Hershey co-star.

First off, Netflix classifies this movie as a thriller. Halfway through, I realized there’s nothing thrilling about it. I liked this movie simply because I like movies that play with time. That’s one reason I loved the Back to the Future series. Why I liked the repeating-day stories of 12:01 (tough as it was to like) and Groundhog Day.

It’s why I liked Go, Vantage Point, and Pulp Fiction, which is similar in its storytelling style in that indie film 11:14 jumps around the same half-hour span, telling different parts of the same story from—for lack of a better term—different vantage points.

Patrick Swayze plays a caring father, even if his actions are misguided. His daughter, played by Rachel Leigh Cook (who doesn’t get a link on Netflix, though I don’t know why), is an out and out bitch. Shawn Hatosy and Hilary Swank have a wonderful chemistry as convenience store employees, one of whom wants to rob the place.

Overall, this movie is nothing new. It’s not very groundbreaking, and its scope is such a tiny microcosm of time—20 minutes tops. And despite good performances by the cast and some cool directing by Greg Marcks and Bree Sharp covering Nancy Sinatra way before Jessica Simpson did, I can’t in good conscience recommend watching it.

Eyezmaze Game: Tontie

It's like Whack a Mole, but with cyclopses!

"It's like Whac-a-Mole, but with Cyclopses!"

This is one of those games that comes along every once in a while that just annoys the hell out of you, and yet you cannot stop playing!!!

The best way to describe Tontie is that it’s like Whac-a-Mole, but with Cyclopes wielding flails! In a minefield!

The mechanics of the game are quite simple. You use the keypad of your keyboard, or if you have a laptop, you have to turn on the keypad part, and each key corresponds to one of nine boxes on the game screen. When a cyclops-guy (called a Tontie) pops up, you hit the button, and your hammer magically appears and satisfyingly knocks the bad guy in the head.

Netflix Review: Assassination of a High School President

Think Chinatown for the teenage set. While investigating the theft of his Catholic high school’s SAT exams, sophomore newspaper reporter Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson) uncovers an even bigger conspiracy. But will anyone believe him when he accuses the class president? Director Brett Simon’s comic noir co-stars Mischa Barton and Bruce Willis as the unbalanced Principal Kirkpatrick, a shell-shocked Desert Storm veteran.

Asassination of a High School President was never released in theaters. It was supposed to, but indie film distributors Yari Film Group ran out of money. Eventually it was released on DVD, and it never received a theatrical run.

In all honesty, I never got to read anything about this film, nor did I see a trailer. Up until last week, I never knew this film existed. I just kind stumbled upon this movie because I have this weird thing for bad movies, and high school movies. Put the two together and you have a perfect match for a weary weekday afternoon.
