The Perfectly Sane Show – Episode 2

The second episode of The Perfectly Sane Show is live at mypodcast.com and on iTunes.

In this episode we babble incoherently about what we’ve been playing, DLC, Assassin’s Creed 2, summer movies all while ingesting vodka infused water ice on Jon’s deck and avoiding a mooing German sheep named Claus.

New Sidekick LX: T-14

The world is two weeks away from seeing the new T-Mobile Sidekick LX. This new Sidekick boasts the thinnest form factor and the biggest screen resolution, as well as a free Twitter application and 3G network capability.

Needless to say I am very excited about this. Not only will I be getting a new cell phone, but it’s going to be a fucking sweet car cell phone! (I’ve taken to quoting Grandma’s Boy whenever I say “fucking sweet” about something.) For the next fourteen days (though not every day), until the release of the new Sidekick LX, I will be writing about how excited I am about this phone and things I find important in a mobile device.

Today we start with—

My Music Monday: REO Speedwagon & Styx

Welcome to My Music Mondays. Each week I will be delving into my music collection and looking at a new artist going somewhat randomly currently but eventually from A to Z. I’ll examine why I first started listening to them, my favorite album and my top 10 songs for the artist. As my music collection is pretty extensive and I have a lot of one offs, I have set a qualification to be featured here. That is that I have to have at least two albums of the artist’s music before they can be considered. This week, due to their Rock Band DLC release tomorrow, I look at the bands REO Speedwagon and Styx.

I did not get into “classic” rock until the end of my high school years (‘95-’96) but I was introduced to both REO Speedwagon and Styx by a friend of mine who believed that music that came after 1983 was not any good (we cured him of that misnomer with a little album called Appetite for Destruction). Anyway I’ve always been a fan of power ballads and REO Speedwagon did them great, which explains my appreciation of their music. Styx on the other hand were far more theatrical in their musical presentation and I wasn’t instantly thrilled with their music, although I did like some of their stuff.

My wife, who at the time was my girlfriend, got me tickets to go see REO Speedwagon and Styx together and that was where I fell in love with Styx. REO Speedwagon was good but by comparison they were amateurs. Styx put on a fantastic stage show and their theatrical musical presentation made perfect sense when put in the context of their live show. I’ve since become a pretty big fan of Styx and the loss of singer / songwriter Dennis DeYoung (over a variety of issues) is a huge loss but they still put on a hell of a good show.

Favorite REO Speedwagon Album:
You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can’t Tuna Fish

I am a fan of hard rock and Tuna Fish is REO Speedwagon’s hardest rocking album, and it contains two of my top three songs by them, Time for Me to Fly and the great rocking anthem Roll With the Changes.

10 Favorite Songs

10. That Ain’t Love
9. Here With Me
8. Dangerous Combination
7. Don’t Let Him Go
6. Take it On the Run
5. I Needed to Fall
4. Keep On Loving You
3. Time For Me To Fly
2. Roll With the Changes
1. Can’t Fight This Feeling

Favorite Styx Album: Edge of the Century

My choice is probably getting more than a couple of weird looks because Edge of the Century came out well after the band’s height of popularity and is generally considered to be one of their weaker albums but I think it is one hell of a solid release. It’s melodic hard rock with a nice mix of power ballads and rock opera theatrics as only Dennis DeYoung knows how to do it.

10 Favorite Songs

10. Suite Madame Blue
9. The Best of Times
8. Renegade
7. Too Much Time On My Hands
6. Don’t Let it End
5. Edge of the Century
4. Lady
3. Lorelei
2. Come Sail Away
1. Show Me The Way

So what do you think of REO Speedwagon and Styx?

The Bear Man

This is a reprint of a 3/9/2006 blog I wrote for one of the sites for which I used to write. I came upon it today and couldn’t stop laughing. I also included the two comments left with it.

Straight guys everywhere, I have a question for you. Many might say that I’ve led a pretty sheltered life. Even more might say that after I make the following revelation. I was always lead to believe that a bear can be one of two things:

Either an animal or a big burly strong man (preferably Russian), right? Did any of you know that a hairy homosexual can also be a bear?!? This much was made aware to me when I created my first myspace page, and gave myself the name “Big Brady Bear.”

Since that time, I noticed that they refer to the gay man in American Wedding as a bear. I guess I saw it then and thought they meant like a teddy bear. Who knew what I was thinking?

Are there any real bears out there? Do any bears ever read this? If so, you are a segment of the gay community I never knew about or even thought about for most of my life. But now I know.

And I will never see the zoo in the same light.

unregistered says

in the old days Bears were big hairy gay men….but these days anyone can be a Bear….im a Liberty Bear.

i joined because i love the atmosphere, the causes they work for, the sense of community….there are several other female members but most of the members are gay men…either hairy gay men or guys who are into hairy gay men.

christopher says

Another bear reader checking in… the “bear movement” got started in the late 80’s/early 90’s as a form of solidarity amongst the gay men that don’t really fit in the young/thin/bronzed/fabulous-hair crowd. (The majority of us are much more teddybear than grizzly, so you weren’t far off! It gets even sillier when you start adding younger “cubs” and “otters” — thinner yet hairy gay men — to the mix.) As Anna mentioned, there are social/community service clubs for bears all over the US and elsewhere in the world, and the Philly bear community is pretty active and diverse.

That pompus windbag is retiring

So, I’m sure a few of my friends would say it like that, referring to AP’s report John Madden retires—though I’m certain they would use more colorful language. The same ones would dance in glee and complain about how Captain Obvious nearly ruined Monday Night Football for them.

I could care less; I’m not that into sports. But, man, do I love Frank Caliendo’s impression of Madden.

iPhone + AT&T for another two years?

InformationWeek is reporting that AT&T, the sole provider of Apple’s iPhone in the US, is seeking to extend it’s exclusivity agreement until 2011. As it stands, the agreement ends in about a year. And then I got to wondering—since I’m so indecisive about a new smartphone lately—would I actually get a phone if my mobile carrier, T-Mobile, were to offer the iPhone?

9021-Uh-0 … She’s Back!

Virtually lost from the public eye is the “return” of Tori Spelling to CW’s hit rehash drama 90210. I say “return” in “quotes” because this isn’t mommy and daddy’s Beverly Hills from 19 years ago.

[ed note- good god, has it really been that long?].

The face-maligned daughter of the very TV tycoon who originally brought us the drama that was Brandon, Brenda, Kelly, Donna, Steve, David, Dylan, and Andrea (collectively known as “the cast” “the gang”), Spelling made her return for episode 19 of the series, which aired last night. This show is aptly entitled “Okaeri, Donna.”

While CW has yet to post the new episode, it is assumed it will eventually join its 18 compelling season one siblings here.

The debut marks – in all likelihood – the end of a string of cameos that have brought back at least a few on screen appearances for several members of the “gang,” at least one off screen producer role for another former “gang” member, and frequent storyline references to another “gang” member who will most likely never be back.

And, according to show producers, enjoy it while it lasts.

Next year, the training wheels will come off and the cast will be expected to carry the show more without so many prominent Spelling-era “gang” members.

Okaeri, Donna, indeed.

Outstanding media source Wikipedia has a full run down of all things 90210.

Sidekick Coming SOON?!?!

I remember saying something about loving the Sidekick and then changing my mind when I was on a drive and didn’t have my Google Maps, but I can still be as excited as anything about the new Sidekick.

Last week, hiptop3 mentioned a May release date for this new Sidekick, citing 13 May 2009. The current Sidekicks on T-Mobile.com have also dropped in price, which means they’re trying to clear out the old, obsolete stock, to make room for the new ones.

I’m still debating between CrackBerry and Sidekick, as I just loved the damn thing’s interface, and the awesome robotic noises it made whenever I opened it. Plus, if Hiptop’s people are right in saying Google Maps on the [new] Sidekick, I’m going to definitely lean towards the new Sidekick. For sure. Most definitely.

Totally.

I guess I better make a decision soon, if I expect to be one of the first people to be awesome!

Fandango on your iPhone!

In a weird bit of irony, PC World is reporting that the iPhone has a new app for buying movie tickets through the popular ticket site Fandango. First off, I don’t use Fandango because they charge me a convenience fee. For the convenience of not having to go to the walk-up machine they have at the theatre? Well, that’s a lot of pointless! Second off, why isn’t Mac World reporting it? I mean, the Apple iPhone isn’t exactly an Intel-or-AMD based machine, running some fancy Windows CE. Or maybe I’m still stuck on the old-world definition of PC.

Anyway, I’m not getting it because (a) I don’t use Fandango, and (b) I don’t have an iPhone, and (c) if I ever get tickets online, it’s thru AMC, because I have an AMC MovieWatcher card.

Which reminds me, I need to see more movies there; I gots ta Ka-Ching!

Twitter Security

For all you twitter peeps out there, you might be interested in something Business Week posted today about how Twitter can be used as a venue for transmitting malware, and what you can do to stop it.

As the article mentions, I already have my computer set up to verify all TinyURL links that pass through my browser, but there are so many other URL-shortening sites out there, like is.gd, twurl and snurl. is.gd, which I use religiously, doesn’t have a preview option available. It would be nice if they did.

Another great article, coming from CSO Online, reinforces the short URL issue and brings up a couple more that we should be aware of.

Symbology used in secret societies

Gianni DeVincent Hayes wrote a series of articles on the website Renew America regarding symbology, which I find find fascinating, as I am currently listening to an audiobook version of Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons. Sure, about half the facts Brown spits out are fictitious drivel, but I still love reading (or in this case) listening to how he spins secret societies and symbols and etymology. Plus, I liked the sequel, The Da Vinci Code.

In case anyone else wants to read this article on symbology, here are the links to Part I | Part II | Part III. It all seems like propaganda against anything that is not Christian, and its specific examples are about as much drivel as the “history” created in Dan Brown’s texts, but none of that changes the many of the basic principles mentioned are true. And it is still very readable.

Also, I happened to find the Illuminati’s blog. If you want to know about the upcoming New World Order, you need but only stop there.

The Perfectly Sane Show – Episode 1

The first episode of my new podcast is live.

In this inaugural episode the crew sits down to discuss the games we’ve been playing, including Peggle, Gears 2, Resident Evil 5, Guitar Hero: Metallica and Legends of Wrestlemania. We also discuss the the music / rhythm genre and if we are tired of them (thanks JSD, sorry for no mention), OnLive and if we think it is a good idea or not, mature games on the Wii (where we maybe alienate the entire Nintendo crowd by mocking the system somewhat uncontrollably), how long before a remake is viable, Vin Diesel (where I make incorrect comments about his training) and the 25 Worst Sports Movies as named by Moviefone. Interspersed between all that we possibly disparage the African American and Asian communities and most certainly disparage the gay community, a certain IGN reader (sorry beezball), and Nintendo fans, although we don’t mean anything by it (except for the Nintendo comments*) and apologize to African American zombies on behalf of white male 30 somethings.

Give it a listen and let us know what you think by dropping a comment here or sending us an email at perfectlysaneshow@gmail.com, we’ll read them on the next show which we are recording on Friday.

My Music Monday: Stephen Lynch

Welcome to My Music Mondays. Each week I will be delving into my music collection and looking at a new artist going somewhat randomly currently but eventually from A to Z. I’ll examine why I first started listening to them, my favorite album and my top 10 songs for the artist. As my music collection is pretty extensive and I have a lot of one offs, I have set a qualification to be featured here. That is that I have to have at least two albums of the artist’s music before they can be considered. This week I look at Stephen Lynch.

It took me a while to decide if I should include Stephen Lynch as a part of My Music Monday. On one hand he can be considered comedy (because he is) but he is a singing comedian so….

Anyway I got into Stephen Lynch after hearing him perform “She Gotta Smile” on the radio, which at the time I believed was called “Big Fat Friend”. From that point I began to look into him further and came across a special he had recorded for Comedy Central, which was all I needed to be hooked in completely. Lynch is irreverent and crude yet highly amusing. His brand of humor won’t be for everyone but he is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, despite having tried many times, I have failed in getting to see him live but he comes to Atlantic City on a fairly regular basis so hopefully I will eventually land tickets.

Favorite Album:
Superhero

It’s just a damn funny album and honestly any album that features Butt Sex Man and Fuck You Dude has to be considered golden.

10 Favorite Songs

10. Talk To Me
9. For the Ladies
8. Best Friends Song
7. Beelz
6. Vanilla Ice Cream
5. Grandfather
4. Little Tiny Mustache
3. Superhero
2. Special
1. She Gotta Smile

So what do you think of Stephen Lynch?
